Goderich Raises Gay Pride Flag At Town Hall

About a dozen people gathered in front of the Goderich town hall Thursday morning to witness the raising of the Gay Pride Flag.

The flag will fly for the entire month of June to mark Gay Pride Month. Goderich Councillor Michele Hansen says she was prompted to put forward a motion that the town purchase and fly the Gay Pride Flag after the request for the rainbow crosswalk was defeated. Hansen says she believes that Goderich is generally a very accepting community, but there are significant areas of discrimination, and suggests that in a rural community that tends to change very slowly.

Hansen adds she believes the key to getting past the discrimination is seeing other people as people and recognizing we are all individuals, and she says that is beginning to happen and the Gay Pride Flag is evidence of that.
