Grey Gables Long Term Care Home To Close

Grey County Council has voted to close Grey Gables in Markdale, as a county run long term care home.

A majority of councillors first turned down an effort to postpone the vote for six months, then they voted for closure.

Grey Highlands Mayor Paul McQueen says it's a big disappointment for all the people who lobbied to keep Grey Gables open.

"You have got to understand me -- I persevere and I don't give up. I'm a little deflated right now but I truly feel for the people in southeast Grey and the east Grey portion of this county," says McQueen.

The Markdale area's Michelle Patey says the fight is far from over.

"We will fight for Rockwood, we will fight for Grey Gables, we are fighting for the citizens of this county," she says.

Patey says they'll take the battle to the LHIN and the minister of health.

Grey Gables will be put up for sale to the private sector, possibly as an assisted living facility. Current residents will be moved to a new facility, which will be built in Durham.
