Almost half of ticks submitted for identification to the Grey Bruce Health Unit are the blacklegged tick capable of transmitting Lyme disease.
The health unit says 112 ticks were submitted and 55 of them were blacklegged.
None of the ticks tested positive for the bacteria that causes Lyme disease, and no human cases have been reported.
The risk of exposure is significant due to the widespread distribution of the ticks in Grey and Bruce.
To prevent tick bites, wear light coloured long-sleeved shirts and pants. Tuck shirts in and tuck your pants into your socks.
Use bug spray containing DEET or Icaridin on your skin and clothing (always follow the directions on the label).
Always check for ticks after outdoor activity.
Removing a tick within 24-36 hours can help prevent infection.
