Mosquitoes Carrying West Nile Virus Found In Mitchell Trap

Perth County has had its first positive finding of West Nile virus.

Tests on mosquitoes taken from a trap in the northeastern part of Mitchell have come back positive for the virus.

The Perth District Health Unit has been trapping and testing mosquitoes since June and has applied larvicide in roadside catch basins in Stratford, St. Marys, Listowel and Mitchell to help reduce mosquito breeding.

In Ontario, there have been four probable or confirmed human cases of West Nile virus reported this year.

Not everyone who is bitten by an infected mosquito will show symptoms of the virus. Symptoms include fever, headache, body ache, nausea, vomiting and rash on chest, stomach or back.
