30th Anniversary For Owen Sound Salmon Spectacular

Anglers are gearing up for the annual Owen Sound Salmon Spectacular Fishing Derby. This year is its 30th anniversary.

The derby is put on by the Sydenham Sportsmen Association, which hosted sponsors and the media at its headquarters near Owen Sound to kick things off.

President Scott Grimoldby says they usually get over 4,000 entrants and expects this year will be no different. But he says the derby has come to include all kinds of events and entertainment.

"There's ten days of entertainment both afternoon and evening from kids' day on the first Sunday through seniors' day, ladies' day. Just every day has grown simply because of our great sponsorship," says Grimoldby.

The top salmon and top trout winners each get a boat, motor and trailer package worth about $40,000.

Last year the biggest salmon came in at around 24 lbs and the biggest trout was close to 20 lbs.

The Owen Sound Salmon Spectacular runs from August 25 to September 3.
