Friday Fires in Owen Sound Set Intentionally

A series of fires early Friday morning in Owen Sound were set on purpose, officials say.

The Owen Sound and Inter-Township fire departments were called to five fires between 1am and 7am Friday. An investigation by the Owen Sound Fire Department and the Ontario fire marshal's office concluded that each fire was arson.

Two fires were reported before 1:30am a block from each other. The first was on the porch of a house in the 1000-block of 3rd Ave E, the second a garbage dumpster on 2nd Ave E.

A pair of additional fires occurred around 4:15am. One involved two garbage dumpsters at an address in the 900-block of 2nd Ave E, the other at a nearby garden shed. A fifth fire was set soon after 6:30am in a commercial-residential block in the 1000-block of 2nd Ave E.

There were no reports of injuries or major property damage, officials say. Investigators would like to speak to a man and a woman seen near the site of the first fire on 3rd Ave E, between 1am and 1:30am Friday. They are considered potential witnesses.

The public is asked to provide any information regarding these arson fires by calling Owen Sound Police at (519) 376-1234, or Crime Stoppers at 1-888-222-TIPS (8477).
