Local Unemployment Rate Increases Slightly In August

There were more people looking for work in August in the Stratford-Bruce Peninsula economic region.

The unemployment rate rose by 0.5% to 3.4%. At the same time, the unemployment rate in Ontario changed very little, dropping 0.1% to 6.3%.

Employment in the Stratford-Bruce Peninsula region increased by 2,900 in August, continuing an upward trend since July of 2017.

The gain was mostly in part-time work. Over the same period, employment in full-time work declined by 700.

Favourable employment news in August included the opening of Cowbell Brewery in Blyth with around 100 employees.

Sleep Country Canada Holdings Inc. is hiring sales associates for its new store in Owen Sound.

Construction on an expanded Foodland grocery store in Owen Sound is scheduled to begin this month. The store is expected to open in the spring and could create up to 60 new jobs.

Two men arrested in Tashmoo Ave. standoff

Sarnia police said the investigation began on May 29 after the victim was allegedly attacked by acquaintances at a residence near Tashmoo Avenue and Christopher Drive at Aamjiwnaang First Nation.
