Controlled Barn Burn in North Perth

The North Perth Fire Department will burn a barn north of Listowel Friday afternoon as part of an education campaign.

Assistant Fire Chief Jason Benn says there are a lot of challenges in fighting barn fires.

"Our biggest challenge living in the rural area is sheer distance," says Benn. "Having water on site to combat the fire.   If there is no water on site than fire services have to truck the water in and rely on their mutual aid partners."

Friday's session will also include a discussion on new technologies to recognize issues that could start barn fires.

"How can we lessen the fires throughout the province in different ways by testing with technology and other avenues of 'hot spot' technology," says Benn.

A number of groups are attending,  including other fire services and insurance companies.

The barn burning is on Road 165 at Line 87 north of Listowel Friday afternoon.
