Sarnia Man Charged in Saugeen Shores Arson

A man is facing charges in connection with an arson fire in Saugeen Shores.

The incident happened shortly after 2am Thursday at a home on Winchfield Rd in Southampton. Police say the homeowner was sleeping when she awoke to find the shed engulfed in flames. The woman went outside to find that her house and her vehicle had also been damaged.

Vulgar graffiti was on all four sides of the main house.  The vehicle was spray-painted and scratched, and foam insulation had been sprayed into the gas tank, according to Saugeen Shores Police Inspector Ken McCulloch.

Saugeen Shores police and fire officials determined that the shed and its contents were a total loss.

A 24-year-old Sarnia man was identified later in the day and taken into custody.  He is charged with criminal harassment, arson, mischief over $5,000, trespassing at night, and two counts of failure to comply with terms of probation.

He was remanded into custody for a show-cause hearing.  The investigation is ongoing.
