200 Turn Out For Magna Carter Speaker At Huron Perth Landowners Meeting

Close to 200 people turned out for a Huron-Perth Landowners Association meeting in Brodhagen Thursday night.

The guest speaker was University of Toronto professor and author Dr. Carolyn Harris who suggested the Magna Carta of 1215 England still has a significant influence on Canadian law and politics on Friday.

“It's interesting that we see some parallels between the Magna Carta in 1215 and the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms in terms of fundamental justice and how justice shall not be delayed and denied but we see these parallels from 1215 through to the modern day,” Harris says. “As Canada in 1867 we took on the British system of constitutional monarchy and the British Common Law system and so these documents that were drafted in the Middle Ages continue to have a very profound impact on Canadian politics and law to the present day."
