More Students Attending Avon Maitland Schools

The treasurer of the Avon Maitland District School Board had some good news for trustees this week.

Cheri Carter reported for the first time in several years that they had a net increase in enrolment.

"For the first time in many years, our total enrolment has increased from the prior year. So we're up 276 from our original estimates for the year, but in addition - we're up 55 from our prior year enrolment," said Carter.

Carter pointed out this year was the third year in a row that the board had seen an increase at the elementary level,  but it was the first year in several that the increase was enough to cover the drop in enrolment at the secondary level, and result in an overall increase.

"We're seeing some increases in the Listowel and in the Stratford areas, we're assuming because some of the population connected to Kitchener and outlying areas are coming into our neck of the woods," Carter added.

The board believes the trend will continue for next year.
