3-Year-Old Missing After Van Swept Into Grand River

Rescue crews are searching for a 3-year-old boy after the vehicle his mother was driving ended up in the Grand River in Amaranth Township.

The Ontario Provincial Police say on Wednesday around 12:52am, the woman's minivan was travelling south on 10th Line when she failed to stop at a road closure sign. The van was then swept into the Grand River by fast-flowing water.

The woman attempted to escape the vehicle with her 3-year-old son, however, the water current pulled the boy from her grip.

The woman was rescued from the river by the Grand Valley Fire Department and taken to an area hospital to be treated.

The OPP Emergency Response Team has been searching the shoreline with the assistance of the OPP Underwater Search and Recovery Unit and an OPP helicopter.  Police are also canvassing for witnesses.

A search is ongoing and no further information has been released.
