OPP: Stay Off The Ice

Ontario Provincial Police in Grey County have issued a warning to people along Georgian Bay.

The OPP is telling the public to stay off the ice formations that have appeared along the bay shore in Meaford.

Police say they have received numerous calls from people concerned about walkers on the frozen bay.

The OPP is not in the position to determine if the ice is safe enough. However, they say ice is never completely safe and can change instantly with weather and water conditions.

The condition of ice can be explained through thickness, currents, age of the ice, pressure cracking and snow cover.

Police say while the formations make great subjects for photographers, people should admire them from a safe distance and not take the risk.
