Huron County Scraps Vacant Unit Tax Rebate

Huron County is phasing out the Vacant Unit Tax Rebate.

Treasurer Michael Blumhagen explains that owners of commercial or retail properties who had empty spaces in their facilities could apply to their local municipality for a rebate of up to thirty per cent.

But he says in many cases, that removed the incentive to attempt to fill those spaces.

Huron County council has passed a bylaw to change that.

Sarting in 2019,  with any vacant unit tax rebate applications that relate to the 2018 tax year,  the rebate will be twenty per cent instead of thirty per cent.

The following year the rebate will be ten per cent, and the following year it'll be fully phased out.
