Employment increases in August in four-county region

The Stratford-to-Bruce Peninsula Economic Region continued to hold the lowest unemployment rate in the province in August.

It was estimated at 3.2 per cent -- a 0.2 percentage point increase from July. The provincial unemployment rate also rose 0.2 percentage points to 6.1 per cent.

Employment increased by 900 in the four-county region, with full-time increases offset by part-time declines.

More people were working in construction, while employment fell in agriculture, utilities, and manufacturing.

Employment in the services-producing sector remained unchanged from July to August.

Favourable news for the region’s economy included an announcement by BWXT and Brotech to bring up to 50 jobs to their new facilities in the former PPG facility in Owen Sound. Both companies are establishing local operations as part of the Bruce Power Life Extension Project.

Two men arrested in Tashmoo Ave. standoff

Sarnia police said the investigation began on May 29 after the victim was allegedly attacked by acquaintances at a residence near Tashmoo Avenue and Christopher Drive at Aamjiwnaang First Nation.
