Province's math changes not significant: AMDSB

A superintendent with the Avon Maitland District School Board says the revisions to the math curriculum being requested by the province won't be a significant departure from the current curriculum.

"What they've done is highlighted what they are calling fundamental math concepts and skills and underscoring the importance for students to develop fluency and competency in those math concepts and skills," said Superintendent Jane Morris

She said all of those concepts existed in the previous Ontario curriculum, but what the ministry is asking teachers to do is to be very deliberate in their focus on the fundamentals of math.

The change was introduced by the new provincial government in response to poor EQAO math test results over the last few years.
