When it comes to selling legal marijuana in North Huron, the Township's two Reeve candidates have differing views.
In proposed cannabis legislation at Queen's Park introduced last week, the province's gambling and alcohol regulator would decide where cannabis stores would be located, including a deadline of January 22nd of next year for municipalities to opt in or opt out of marijuana retail.
Incumbent Neil Vincent says he hopes more discussions and logistics emerges shortly, and even some "guiding principles" to setting up marijuana retail locations. Vincent admitted North Huron was too small to be considered in the initial roll-out.
Challenger Bernie Bailey stressed that a decision like this needs to be discussed among council members first so everyone is on the same page, but he did note North Huron has previously designated land to grow marijuana, saying "if we're going to designate land for that, we should be able to sell it in stores".
Both candidates did note that they're concerned about how police will be able to handle the legalization of marijuana federally, which is scheduled for October 17th. This year's Municipal Elections will take place just five days later on October 22nd.
