Woman charged after drowning of three-year-old boy earlier this year

The OPP have charged a woman in connection with the drowning death of a three-year-old boy earlier this year.

Kaden Young was swept away in the fast-flowing Grand River during flooding in late February. His body was recovered on April 21.

Police said on February 21 just before 1 a.m., a minivan travelling southbound on the 10th Line of Amaranth Township did not stop at a road closure sign and the vehicle was swept into the Grand River. That's when Young was lost.

Young's mother, Michelle Hanson, 35, of Amaranth has been charged with impaired driving causing death, dangerous driving causing death, and criminal negligence causing death.

The accused is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Orangeville on November 6.

Police are not commenting on specific details of the allegations to protect the integrity of the ensuing court process.

In a news release, the OPP said it sympathizes with and expresses its heartfelt condolences to the family of the tragic loss and remember and recognize the many community residents and visitors who gave of their time to search for Young.
