The Perth-Huron United Way's Social Research and Planning Council is taking a closer look at the impact of low incomes on families and communities.
The planning council calculated in 2015 that a living wage was the income two adults needed over a 37 and a half hour work week to cover basic needs. It was set at $16.47 an hour, which works out to be about $65,000 a year.
Council Director Susanna Reid said that means that about half of the families in Huron County are making less than a living wage.
The goal of a recent workshop was to look at possible solutions.
"We talked about possible solutions to address housing needs, income insecurity, food insecurity, physical and mental health inequities and brought everybody together to give their ideas about how we could be collaborating and perhaps be more effective and working as a community to address these challenges," said Reid.
The council has also opened a photographic show at the Blyth Art Gallery. It runs until November 11 and it's titled 'What Does It Look Like to Live on Less'.
