SIU terminates investigation into Brussels arrest in October

The Ontario Special Investigations Unit has terminated an investigation into the arrest of a man last month in Brussels.

On the morning of October 5, Ontario Provincial Police officers were dispatched to a residence for a domestic situation. Police located an intoxicated male on the property that had been causing damage to a home.

Palmerston native Todd Regular, 38, was arrested and charged with three counts of mischief and one count of assault.

Regular was later medically assessed in his cell in Goderich, and diagnosed with a fractured rib and a fracture to his left hand, however, SIU Acting Director Joseph Martino said preliminary inquiries established he did not sustain a rib fracture, and there is no evidence the injury to his hand was caused by police.

He said evidence provides good reason to believe the injury was self-inflicted prior to the arrival of police.
