A hockey game Sunday featuring Central Huron firefighters and a team of retired NHL players raised a total of $5,000 for the Huron Residential Hospice. The 50-50 draw raised another $638.
Central Huron Mayor and County Warden Jim Ginn and Huron Hospice Clinical Coordinator Kate Nesbitt dropped the puck for the ceremonial face off.
Nesbitt said events like are critical for the hospice because the government only covers 50 per cent of their costs so they really count on the support of the community.
She added they've provided good palliative care in the community for several years but the Hospice is a home setting that tends to bring families together.
She said they don't have the burden of caregiver fatigue and families know there are two registered staff members with expertise in palliative care there at all times to look after their loved ones so they can focus on celebrating that person's life.

Organizers wanted to thank retired Detroit Red Wings player and Goderich resident Larry Jeffrey for donating two t-shirts with emblems of the original six hockey teams in the NHL. They were signed by Jeffrey and all of the players for the retired NHL Pro Team.
They also wanted to recognize Corrie’s Foodland from Clinton which donated all of the food for the players and volunteers after the game. Scott Fletcher of Hyundai Goderich was the title sponsor again for this year's event, and to the Central Huron Fire Department for chose Huron Residential Hospice as their charity of choice.
