UPDATE: Charges laid after fire forces tenants out into the cold in Mount Forest

Updated 4:20 p.m.:

Police have charged a man in connection with an apartment fire in Mount Forest.

The blaze broke out just before 6 a.m. Thursday in one of the apartments of a ten-unit complex on Egremont Street.

A 32-year-old man was taken to hospital with burns to his hand.

The fire was contained to the one unit and damage is estimated at $100,000.

The Ontario Fire Marshal was called in to help investigate.

Patrick David McDermott, 32, of Mount Forest has been charged with arson by negligence and is scheduled to appear in Guelph Court on January 18.

All the apartments had to be evacuated and the tenants are being accommodated by Guelph-Wellington Housing.
