Brockton votes for potential cannabis retail or production facilities

The potential for a legal cannabis retail or production location has been approved for Brockton.

Council voted unanimously Tuesday night in favour of possibly having a retail location for legal cannabis.

Mayor Chris Peabody said on top of the overwhelming results from a recent survey supporting a cannabis retail site, other factors contributed to the all-in decision.

"Another factor in our CAO’s report was the potential for a production facility. Being a very strong agricultural area here in Brockton, we feel we would have the potential to attract a producer like 7-Acres," said Peabody.

Mayor Peabody also noted that the municipality has land to accommodate such a facility, like the industrial park, as well as the large empty facility where the old Energizer plant was.

However, the mayor said it’s unlikely any cannabis store or facility would be near downtown Walkerton.

"The 150-metre zoning that’s in the provincial laws now, from high schools, that’s not acceptable to me. I’ll be working to make sure that the exclusion zone, from high schools and elementary schools, is much larger," said Peabody.

As a former teacher, Mayor Peabody said he would prefer the facility or store be located away from schools and the downtown area.
