ABCA Shoreline Management Plan generates discussion

The new Shoreline Management Plan proposed by the Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority has generated a great deal of interest and discussion.

The most-asked questions are around shoreline protection.

The conservation authority's Geoff Cade said at this point they don't require any engineering when an existing structure is being repaired unless there is some concern about the impact of the repaired structure.

"When one is proposing a brand new sea wall, where no shoreline protection existed previously, the proposal is to require mandatory engineering assessment of the impact. As we know these things can cause a negative impact."

And Cade said they don't have a coastal engineer on staff.

The public consultation period ends Friday.

Cade will then compile all of the comments and give them to the board of directors.   He said he hopes to have those documents in the board's hands by the second week in February so the board will have time to look them over ahead of the board meeting on February 21.
