A-C-W to change from reeve to mayor

Ashfield-Colborne-Wawanosh council is changing the name of its head of council from reeve to mayor.

Reeve Glen McNeil said the change was suggested by the former reeve Ben Van Diepenbeek before he retired last year. But the change could not be made during an election year, so they waited until this year.

In the interim, Deputy Reeve Roger Watt did some research and found that of the 441 municipalities in the province, all but 14 now use the term mayor.

McNeil said it makes sense to make the change.

"It tends to be confusing to the public. Like, what's the difference between reeve and mayor?" said McNeil. "There isn't any. It's just a different title and so it's just a matter of making a designation that the public understands."

A-C-W council voted in favour of making the change and the bylaw making that official will come back to council at its next meeting.
