Policing change in Wingham this week

Wingham residents will start to see a change in their police service later this week.

At noon Thursday, the Ontario Provincial Police formally take over for the Wingham Police Service.

That will signal the beginning of a three-year period of transitional policing in Wingham and North Huron.

Last June, North Huron council voted to accept a resubmitted OPP proposal for police service in the Wingham ward. Prior to that, the controversial issue had been debated for months at public meetings and around the council table.

The impact it will have on North Huron's 2019-2020 budget has not been finalized.

North Huron council is planning a special ceremony Tuesday evening at its regular council meeting to pay tribute to members of the Wingham Police Service.
