Ausable Bayfield Watershed may see minor flooding

With over 20 millimetres of rain in the forecast before lunch tomorrow, the Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority is warning minor flooding is a possibility. Rain is expected to begin tonight, and a quick runoff may occur due to the saturated ground conditions.

Based on current weather and streamflow forecasts, levels in watercourses could approach or exceed bank-full conditions, resulting in minor flooding of the traditional low-lying flood plain areas. Levels in smaller watercourses are projected to peak late Saturday, with larger rivers peaking Sunday and into Monday. Flows are expected to remain above seasonal into next week.

Significant flooding is not expected, but slippery and unstable stream banks and extremely cold and fast-flowing water will combine to create hazardous conditions. Ice remaining on ponds and reservoirs will be very unsafe. Residents are reminded to use caution near all watercourses.

The flood conditions safety statement will remain in effect until 9:00 a.m. on Monday
