Southgate changes policy on small farm businesses

Southgate has put an end to a policy limiting the number of employees working in small industrial or commercial enterprises on farms.

In recent years, Southgate has had a steady stream of such businesses locating on farms and they were limited to five employees plus the owner.  The idea was to keep the business from getting too large.

But council heard the limit was difficult to enforce and the employee numbers are already limited by the physical size of the building.

Mayor John Woodbury said the extra jobs will be good for the local economy.
