Budget approved for 2019-2020 by AMDSB trustees

Trustees with the Avon Maitland District School Board have approved a budget for 2019-2020.

Treasurer Cheri Carter said revenues were down by just over $7 million for the year - that's a combination of a reduction of $5.6 million in provincial funding and reduced revenue from international students.

"That reduction would have been deeper too, had we not received the attrition protection funding from the Ministry of Education. That equated to about $3.5 million.  So once that goes, as we know it will, it'll be deeper cuts in future years," she said.

Carter said the cuts will definitely impact staffing.

"All staff levels were down 57 full-time equivalents, so that's not necessarily 57 people, it could be more, people are working part-time or just teaching part of the time."

Elementary level enrolment is down by 25 students, but Carter says that number generally goes up by September.  In the last few years, they've seen a slight increase in elementary enrolment.

Secondary level enrolment continues to decline.
