Heat Wave: How to keep cool

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement urging people to take care in the heat as the mercury rises to over 30 C in Midwestern Ontario.

Wellington County sent out a statement this morning warning people of the hazards of the heat and humidity. It suggests everyone stay hydrated, avoid direct sunlight, keep blinds and curtains closed to keep your home cooler and schedule strenuous activities for early morning or late in the evening.

You are also asked to check on family, friends and neighbours that don't have air conditioning to make sure they are okay and never leave pets or vulnerable people in locked cars.

In Perth East, a cooling centre is now open at the Perth East Recreation Complex in Milverton. It will stay open until 4:30 p.m. on Thursday and reopen Friday at 8 am. There are plans to have it open again Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. as well.

Officials warn vulnerable people like those with existing medical conditions, the elderly and small children are at higher risk of heat-related illnesses.
