Local unemployment rate decreases in June

The unemployment rate for the Stratford-to-Bruce Peninsula Economic Region decreased by 1.3 percentage points in June.  It was estimated at 3.4 per cent.

The provincial unemployment rate decreased by 0.3 percentage points to 5.6 per cent.

The Four County Labour Market Planning Board reports that employment increased by 8,500 in the region, with both full-time and part-time gains.

The biggest increases were in accommodation and food services, wholesale and retail trade, and healthcare and social assistance.

The Canadian economy posted a loss of 2,200 jobs in June, and the jobless rate edged up to 5.5 per cent, compared to 5.4 per cent in May.

Two men arrested in Tashmoo Ave. standoff

Sarnia police said the investigation began on May 29 after the victim was allegedly attacked by acquaintances at a residence near Tashmoo Avenue and Christopher Drive at Aamjiwnaang First Nation.
