Owen Sound police make arrest in romance fraud case

Members of the Owen Sound Police Service Criminal Investigation Branch have arrested a suspect involved in an alleged $25,000 fraud.

An employee of a local financial institution alerted police to some suspicious banking activity.

Through their investigation, police learned that a 23-year-old woman from Toronto had befriended a suitor from the area on a dating website. Over a period of weeks, the suspect took advantage of the vulnerability and generosity of this individual, using various stories and excuses.

The young woman has been charged with fraud over $5,000.

Owen Sound police said if it had not been for the alert bank employee, the losses could have been significantly higher.

Police warn all residents to be guarded and vigilant of dating websites.
