Fanshawe College plans Culinary Management program in Huron County

Fanshawe College will soon offer a Culinary Management diploma program in Huron County.

The Huron Bruce Regional Sites at Fanshawe College has partnered with Oakwood Resort and Conference Centre in Grand Bend.

The two-year program will be offered on-site beginning in September 2020.

The program will mirror the existing curriculum offered at the College's Downtown London Campus, with the added benefit of providing experiential learning to students at a working resort.

Culinary Management will open to approximately 18 students in its first year at Oakwood Resort, including international students.

The entire program will be taught at the Oakwood Resort, 70671 Bluewater Highway, Grand Bend. The partnership was announced on Monday, September 9 at the resort's annual David Scatcherd Memorial Charity Golf Tournament.

"This is a wonderful opportunity for students," said John Mombourquette, the associate dean responsible for the Huron/Bruce Regional Sites. "The students will not only get the same quality instruction as at our London school, but they will get experience applying their skills at a working resort. The County of Huron is particularly excited, as this program is really focused on meeting the significant local labour market demand for culinary and hospitality workers."

The Culinary Management program will offer a blend of practical and theoretical training, with an emphasis on dining culture and service excellence. Students will learn advanced culinary planning, preparation and presentation for a variety of foodservice environments using a range of classical and contemporary techniques, as well as business operation and management principles such as food costing, menu planning, marketing, safe food handling and responsible kitchen management. Graduates of the program can expect to find employment as cooks, chefs or food service managers in a wide variety of foodservice environments or continue their studies in Baking and Pastry Arts Management, Nutrition and Food Service Management, Artisanal Culinary Arts and other programs in the hospitality and culinary arts sector. Financial assistance may be available to applicants who qualify.
