Local council settles on 2020 budget numbers

Hanover Council has settled on its budget for 2020.

The new budget, which still needs official approval in the new year, contains a 3.68 per cent tax levy increase. Mayor Sue Paterson said it's always difficult to balance taxes with maintaining public services and programs, as well as updating and maintaining local infrastructure.

"That prioritization is based on our asset management plan, and our strategic plan and of course health and safety for all our residents."

Mayor Paterson also noted that Hanover has a number of big capital projects coming in the new year.

"We've got a water main extension for a new subdivision that's helping with our growth, and one of the largest capital projects will be our wastewater chlorine disinfection system."

In terms of other infrastructure, many local roads are going to be repaved, and they are also going to pave the cemetery road, as well, which Mayor Paterson thinks will please many Hanover residents. The budget will be set at $6.9 million, and Hanover has set aside $5.1 million for capital projects next year, with $1.4 million of that coming from OLG funding and local taxes.
