Owen Sound taxes edge upwards

Owen Sound City Council has passed the 2020 budget which includes an overall levy increase of 2.7 per cent or $810,000.

Once growth, county and school taxes are added to the average, residential taxes in 2020 are projected to be $3,830.

The police budget, which was trimmed down by $70,000 from the last budget meeting, makes up about 28 per cent of the tax burden. Fire services sit at 18 per cent, and public works and engineering represents 21 per cent of the tax burden. Facilities and services along with government and administration make up about 14 per cent each of the tax burden.

Some of the major capital projects planned for the year include an official plan update, gateway signage, a new aerial platform fire truck and improvements to the tot lot, and community hall at Harrison Park.

Two men arrested in Tashmoo Ave. standoff

Sarnia police said the investigation began on May 29 after the victim was allegedly attacked by acquaintances at a residence near Tashmoo Avenue and Christopher Drive at Aamjiwnaang First Nation.
