Huron County looking for solutions to lack of housing

Huron County's homelessness programs supervisor says they're working with the county's Planning and Economic Development Departments to find solutions to the critical shortage of housing that exists, not only in Huron County but throughout the province.

“It does have an impact on everybody, whether that's young people just kind of getting their start in the world or those who are earning lower wages, even seniors who are looking to downsize are all beginning to feel the impact of the small amounts of stock that we have available to us in this category,” explained Erin Schooley.

Schooley said, in Huron County, it's reached the point that there aren't enough people to fill the jobs that are available, but if people could be encouraged to re-locate to Huron County, there's no place for them to live.

Schooley said part of their effort involves education about how serious the issue is in Huron County and how housing strengthens a community.

“It's good for building sustainable communities and it supports the workforce and that housing might come in a variety of forms," she said. "And we want to work together with everybody for solutions on what that could be.”
