Disturbance in Hanover leads to multiple charges

A report of a disturbance in Hanover lead to the arrest of a suspect on offences including sexual assault, assaulting police, and flight from an officer.

On Saturday, officers arrived at the scene and tried to stop a suspect vehicle that was just leaving, but the motorist drove off, nearly hitting an officer. Police pursued a dangerous driver, as the vehicle hit curbs, and almost crashed into a police car.

The vehicle was stopped,  the driver arrested and taken to the hospital for treatment. Then the suspect became enraged and violently tried to take an officer’s handgun. The suspect was then subdued.  Police say further investigation revealed a sexual assault had taken place.

A 53-year-old man was later remanded into custody on charges of Sexual Assault, Assaulting Police, Attempting to Disarm an Officer, Flight from an Officer, Dangerous Driving, and other offences.

The name of the accused is being withheld under the authority of a court-ordered publication ban to protect the identity of the victim.
