Central Huron staff are currently looking into how municipalities can control cannabis operations in their communities.
Central Huron Mayor and Huron County Warden, Jim Ginn, says it's becoming a problem in several municipalities. He says in many cases, the municipal council doesn't even know they're there. “Many times were not aware even of an operation in our municipalities. Even if they have got a Federal license, they're supposed to contact us, but it doesn't happen so, there may be some in areas that people aren't even aware of.”
Ginn says the biggest problem with the cannabis operations is the odour. He says some cannabis operations are indoors or some are outdoors and the zoning is different for each one. But he says odour is a much bigger problem with the indoor operations. “The biggest problem with growing it, apparently, is if the humidity gets too high, it's subject to moulding and that essentially destroys the crop. So they need to have a lot of air movement, so inside facilities have quite a few exhaust fans.”
Ginn says, to address that problem, they need a lot of air movement, so inside facilities have a lot of exhaust fans and the odour in the air they blow out of the building can be very strong.
