LaSalle man faces racing, impaired charges in Wellington County

A 43-year-old LaSalle man is looking at several serious charges after being caught not only allegedly speeding, but also drinking.

Ontario Provincial Police in Wellington County said an officer was conducting routine traffic enforcement on Wellington Road 6 south of Mount Forest. At around 1:30 a.m. Saturday, the officer spotted a vehicle going northbound at a speed that was clocked at 130 kilometres per hour. The speed limit in that area is 80 kilometres per hour.

The driver was stopped and it was determined that the driver had been drinking. A roadside test resulted in a fail, and the driver was arrested and taken to an OPP operations centre for further screening, according to Constable Kirk MacDonald.

Thomas Hughes of LaSalle is charged with racing, driving with over 80 milligrams of alcohol in blood, and driving with an open container. His vehicle was impounded and his driver's licence was automatically suspended for seven days.

Hughes will have a chance to defend himself against the charges, which have yet to be proven, in a Guelph courtroom on November 17.
