Local fire officials share holiday safety tips

While some Christmas trees have been up for some time, others could be decorated this weekend.

But if it is real tree, the Fire Prevention Officer for Perth East and West Perth says there are tips to keep in mind.

James Marshall says it's all about safety.

"On picking out the tree, shake it, make sure not too many needles are falling off. Trim the bottom of the tree a little bit so that it's fresh so it can suck up the water a little faster," said Marshall.

He adds trees should always be set up away from fireplaces or heaters.

"So don't have your fireplace right next to the tree, don't have heaters right next to the tree. And ensure that your lights you are putting on the tree all function are not frayed."
