SIU investigating after infant dies in Stratford

The province's Special Investigations Unit says it is investigating the death of an 18-month-old infant this week in Stratford.

Emergency Medical Services and officers with the Stratford Police Service were dispatched to a residence on February 16th after a call about a child in medical distress. A release notes that the child was administered CPR before the child was transported to hospital, where it was pronounced deceased.

The release from the SIU says they are focused on the conduct of the police in the time leading up to the child's death, and whether an appropriate level of care was exercised with respect to the child's wellbeing.

According to the release: "One subject official, four witness officials and one service employee witness have been designated. The post-mortem took place on Thursday".

Sarnia police said the investigation began on May 29 after the victim was allegedly attacked by acquaintances at a residence near Tashmoo Avenue and Christopher Drive at Aamjiwnaang First Nation.
