Police stand-off ends with one man dead, officer in hospital

The province's police oversight agency is investigating following a stand-off in Fergus that ended with one man dead and a police officer in hospital.

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) said on Sunday at around 11 a.m., officers with the Ontario Provincial Police responded to a call for a domestic disturbance at a residence on Belsyde Avenue East.

While at the scene, the officers negotiated with a 31-year-old man for over two hours. At 1:38 p.m., the officers and the man became involved in what the SIU called an "interaction." During the incident, at least one officer shot the man, who was then pronounced dead at the scene.

As a result of the interaction, an OPP officer was also taken to hospital with serious injuries.

The SIU is an independent oversight agency that investigates incidents involving police officers that have resulted in death, serious injury, or allegations of sexual assault.
