Celebrating 20 years of continuing education

This fall the Avon Maitland District School Board is celebrating 20 years of managing the Centres for Employment and Learning in Huron and Perth Counties.

Principal of Adult and Continuing Education, Kendra Brohman, says before they merged into one service most of the high schools within the board offered Adult Ed. Programs. Other organizations also offered a variety programs that were provided by the government.

Brohman says they amalgamated so clients could go to any one of the centres and get the same programs in their area that were offered anywhere within the Board.

“Over time, things like ESL have been added. We have a ESL classroom program, we have some ESL curriculum writing that we do for the government. We have some youth programs now. I think they probably weren't in existence when this started. But the idea was that people could go, one-stop shop and get all the things they needed,” said Brohman.

Another category offered is for someone who wants to get their GED or high school diploma.

To commemorate the anniversary, information about CEL services will be posted on social media. Each office in the region will also have displays.

Locations can be found in Clinton, Exeter, Goderich, Listowel, Seaforth, Stratford and Wingham.
