The Municipality of South Bruce Peninsula Council has received a Municipal Administration Facility and Community Hub Pre-Design Report.
The report stated the current administration is housed at 315 George Street, Wiarton, Ontario, in a building constructed in 1968 for another purpose. The report says issues with the facility include overcrowding, with no room for future growth. The report added that deferred maintenance has resulted in deteriorating building condition.
The report recommended a new 19,000 square foot facility on Jenny street, which would cost $11.2 million dollars for phase one, with future phases projected to cost 41.6 million.
Future phases would include a multi-use recreational facility of up to 150,000 square feet. The fully developed facility could include an aquatic centre, an arena, pickleball courts with walking track, indoor arts and culture space, multipurpose rooms for community use, a fitness centre, an outdoor farmers’ market, outdoor festival / special event space, landscaping, and a water feature.
Council will continue to study the proposal.
