IODE Goderich commemorates 120th anniversary with Poppy Project

Members of the Maple Leaf Chapter of the IODE in Goderich have found a unique way to mark their 120th anniversary.

Communications Convener Heather Ball says they felt it was a major milestone and they wanted to celebrate it with a major project.

Ball “So we co-ordinated with the museum and the local Legion and we came up with the Poppy Project and this is actually the one hundredth anniversary year of the poppy being the Legion's representative of the Fallen Soldiers.”

Ball says it's taken a lot of time and a lot of help from the community to get it all together, but they were able to put a blanket of poppies over the tank on the lawn of the museum in time for Remembrance Day.

Ball says “We started actually putting the word out for making poppies to community members, not just our IODE group, but to seniors groups, to the Alzheimer's Society to different groups around the community to help us with making the poppies.”

The tank is covered with poppies now and Ball says they'll be officially commemorated on Monday, November 1st and will remain on the tank until through Remembrance Day on November 11th.
