Bayfield bridge work goal in sight

Bluewater councillor, Bill Whetstone, says it won't be long before traffic is moving across the new bridge on Highway 21 at the north end of Bayfield.

Whetstone says the lines were painted on the pavement recently and it's expected that traffic will begin driving on the new bridge sometime in January, depending on the weather.

“Then the removal of the temporary bridge will begin immediately after the traffic switch because that needs to be removed to allow for the installation of the sidewalk, to the west side and it's planned to be completed by March. If all goes well with the weather, they hope to be completely done with the project by May of 2022,” said Whetstone.

Preliminary work on the bridge was started in the fall of 2019 and construction started in the spring of 2020.

The project involved building a temporary bridge right beside the existing bridge, then tearing down and re-building the old bridge to the east of the temporary bridge.

The process will be reversed to start work on the other side.
