Downtown fire smothered by Saugeen Shores firefighters

A quick response by firefighters in Port Elgin extinguished any threat of fire spreading in the downtown core.

At around 2:35 p.m. Wednesday, Saugeen Shores firefighters responded to a report of smoke at a building on Goderich Street.

A total of 25 firefighters from Port Elgin and Southampton stations responded to the call and saw smoke on the main floor of the building, which also has upper level apartments.

The source of the smoke was discovered in a roof cavity between two buildings. The fire was quickly put out and burned materials were removed.

No one was hurt and one tenant was displaced and is staying with family.

Saugeen Shores Fire Prevention is investigating the cause of the fire, along with an estimate of damage.

Two men arrested in Tashmoo Ave. standoff

Sarnia police said the investigation began on May 29 after the victim was allegedly attacked by acquaintances at a residence near Tashmoo Avenue and Christopher Drive at Aamjiwnaang First Nation.
