A Co-Founder of the Blue Bayfield program that has evolved into the Blue Schools Network was part of a presentation to Huron County council recently.
Betty Durst explained, they were asking county council to support a seven-point petition created by the national Council of Canadians petition asking the federal government for action on Just Transition legislation. The goal was to have county council support the seven points in the petition and then it would be passed on to the Federal government.
"It's not just a transition off of oil and gas and fossil fuels. It's also making sure that it's a just transition, that people have access to good, green jobs and that no one gets left behind," said Durst.
"Council supported reducing emissions by at least sixty per cent below 2005 levels. That's very progressive. And winding down the fossil fuel industry and related infrastructures. That's very progressive."
Council also supported winding down the fossil fuel industry and related infrastructures and she felt that was very progressive as well. The third point that council supported was the creation of good, green jobs and inclusive work force development.
Durst says the three points that council supported were the main points for them and she also appreciated council taking the time to discuss the issues raised in the petition.
