UPDATE: Fire at Port Elgin motel, man faces charges

One firefighter had to be treated in hospital after a fire broke out at the Maplewood Motel in Port Elgin.

At approximately 1 p.m. on Sunday, Saugeen Shores firefighters responded to the fire which was visible from one of the units and the attic area.

Twenty-seven firefighters from the Port Elgin, Southampton stations, as well as firefighters from the Municipality of Kincardine, Tiverton station, were at the scene.

One firefighter had to be transported to hospital and was treated and released. The extent of the injuries were not disclosed.

Tenants in the the 11-unit motel found alternate accommodations.

Saugeen Shores Police have charged a 39-year old in connection with the fire.

The 39-year old of no fixed address faces multiple charges including Arson – Disregard for Human Life, Mischief Endangering Life, Fail to comply with a probation order.

The charges have yet to be proven in court.

Two men arrested in Tashmoo Ave. standoff

Sarnia police said the investigation began on May 29 after the victim was allegedly attacked by acquaintances at a residence near Tashmoo Avenue and Christopher Drive at Aamjiwnaang First Nation.
