Emergency crews responded to the blaze at a garbage dump along Grey Road 3 between Allan Park Road and Concession Road 6, near Hanover.
Heavy smoke can be seen near the area as firefighters work on putting the fire out. The area remains closed as of 7:30 p.m.
No injuries have been reported, and the cause has not been released.
Police are asking the public to avoid the area.
People in southern Huron and Lambton counties are being told to limit their time outside.
